We use our phones not only to check work emails and send business communications but, increasingly, to access apps for important business functions, such as accounting, HR, marketing and sales. While some companies and individuals use security solutions such as VPNs with computers, smartphone VPN adoption has been slower.
To help you ensure secure data access on your mobile devices, we’ve put together a list of the best VPNs for Android.

On Hide.me’s website
Why we picked it
hide.me is a VPN provider with an Android app that allows you to choose from 2,600 servers in more than 91 locations across Asia, Europe and the Americas. You can switch servers as often as you like. Its auto-server selection functionality automatically connects you to the fastest server, which saves you time in finding the right server for your desired location.
Once you’ve downloaded hide.me from the Google Play Store, you just need to register with an email address and tap on “enable protection” to get started. If you’re using the free plan, you don’t have to register and can start using the VPN immediately.
In terms of features, hide.me was certified as a log-free VPN by an independent security analyst. Being log-free means that your VPN provider doesn’t collect or store data about your online activity, including your IP address, sites you’ve visited or files downloaded.
hide.me’s features include:
- Split tunneling (funnel some traffic or apps through a VPN and others directly)
- AES-256 encryption
- IP leak protection (ensures all traffic goes through the VPN)
- An automatic kill switch (blocks your internet access when the VPN drops until the connection is restored)
- Supports WireGuard, IKEv2 and OpenVPN VPN protocols
- Supports 10 simultaneous connections
- 24/7 customer support
hide.me’s Android app supports Android 6/Android TV 7 or newer devices but, unlike other providers, it doesn’t support Android 5 Lollipop.
hide.me’s free plan has limited features. You only get one connection, restricted speeds and eight server locations. Its paid plans start at $9.95/month if paid monthly, $7.50/month if paid every six months and $2.88/month for a 17-month contract.
Pros
- Zero logs policy is independently certified
- Use on up to 10 devices
- Free plan
Cons
- Not completely anonymous as email is required to register
- Limited features on free plan
- No dedicated IP addresses
Who should use it
If you’re not sure about whether a VPN is right for you, you can try hide.me’s free plan to get started and then upgrade if you want additional features. However, if you’re running on Android 5 Lollipop, note that hide.me doesn’t support that operating system.

On NordVPN’s website
Why we picked it
NordVPN for Android can require some manual configuration depending on the device you have and your preferred VPN protocol. NordVPN is available on devices running v7.0 of the Android operating system or later. Users with v6.0 and older will need to manually configure the VPN if they want to use it. On Android devices, NordVPN only provides encryption through NordLynx and OpenVPN VPN protocols. You have to set up IKEv2/IPSec protocols manually.
NordVPN provides connection to 6,400 servers in 111 countries (which is the top of the range in this guide). Android users can also access a double VPN, which routes your traffic through two VPN servers instead of one.
NordVPN’s key features include:
- 24/7 customer support
- A kill switch
- AES-256 encryption
- Ability to connect up to 10 devices
- A no-logs policy
NordVPN’s Basic plan costs $12.99/month if paid monthly, which goes down to $4.99/month if paid annually and $3.59/month if paid biennially.
Related: For more information on NordVPN and how it compares to other VPN services, check our Surfshark vs. NordVPN and NordVPN vs. ExpressVPN guides.
Pros
- 30-day money-back guarantee
- 24/7 customer support
- Double VPN feature
Cons
- Only supports Android 7.0 or later (unless you use a manual configuration)
- Monthly price on the high side
- Steep price increase on renewal of your annual/biennial plan
Who should use it
NordVPN’s double VPN feature makes it a good option for businesses that need to protect highly sensitive data (for example, journalists that need to protect their sources or have access to confidential information).

On Private Internet Access’ website
Why we picked it
Private Internet Access (PIA) provides VPN access across an unlimited number of devices to servers in 91 countries (though it doesn’t specify the total number of offered servers). With a court-proven no-logs policy, PIA offers two VPN protocols for you to choose from — OpenVPN and WireGuard — along with unlimited bandwidth.
Other features include:
- Ad-blocking
- Tracker and malware prevention
- A kill switch
- Multi-hop routing (which sends your traffic through an additional server)
- DNS leak protection
- 24/7 customer support
PIA’s Router VPN feature lets you configure the VPN on your router so even if your device isn’t VPN-compatible, you can still secure it using PIA. It offers standard and inverse split tunneling, meaning you can either choose which apps, websites and IP to include or exclude.
PIA offers heavy discounts on multiyear pricing and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Pricing starts at $11.95/month if paid monthly. This decreases to $3.33/month if paid yearly and $2.03/month for a 39-month (three years plus three months) contract. An antivirus system and dedicated IP are optional add-ons that incur additional charges.
Pros
- Unlimited device connections
- Heavy discounts on multiyear deals
- 30-day money-back guarantee
Cons
- Only supports two VPN protocols (OpenVPN and WireGuard)
- Unknown number of available servers
- Antivirus add-on protects Windows PCs
Who should use it
PIA is ideal for businesses that are willing to take out long-term contracts due to the heavy discounts applied for one-year and three-year contracts. It’s also great for companies that want one VPN to cover a lot of devices, as it offers unlimited device connections.

4.3/5
Our rating considers features, value for money, customer support and user reviews. Ratings are assigned exclusively by our editorial team.
Why we picked it
TorGuard’s VPN network provides access to more than 3,000 servers in more than 50 countries worldwide. While the number of servers is higher than many of this guide’s VPN services, the number of countries is much lower.

Unlike other VPN services, TorGuard provides specific plans for businesses. These start at $32.99/month if paid monthly and include dedicated IP, HIPAA compliance, five-plus email accounts and five-plus users.
TorGuard’s Android app has solid reviews, but it hasn’t been updated since April 2023 according to the Google Play store.
Pros
- Business-specific plans available
- HIPAA-compliant VPN
- Wide range of VPN protocols available
Cons
- Limited number of countries with servers

On Proton VPN’s website
Why we picked it
One of Proton VPN’s differentiating factors is that it operates out of Switzerland, which has some of the strongest privacy laws in the world and isn’t part of intelligence-sharing treaties, according to the company. Its apps are open-source, which means that the code the app is built with is publicly available.
Proton VPN has over 6,500 servers in more than 110 countries worldwide. To access Proton VPN’s servers on your Android device, you can either tap the “Quick Connect” button or manually choose a country and server.
Key features include:
- A kill switch
- Split tunneling
- Double hop, which passes internet traffic through multiple servers
- No-log policy
- No data limits
- DNS leak prevention
- Ad blocker
- AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption
Proton VPN offers a free forever plan, which comes with around 300 servers in about 10 countries. The downside with this option is you can’t choose your own server and are automatically assigned one. If you want to upgrade to a premium plan, pricing starts at $9.99/ month if paid monthly. This drops to $4.99/month for a one-year contract and $4.49/month for a two-year contract.
Pros
- Open-source apps
- Servers available in 110-plus countries
- Free plan
Cons
- Comparatively limited discounts for longer contracts
- No server selection with the free plan
- Live chat only available 9 a.m.-12 a.m. CET
Who should use it
Companies that want extra assurance that their internet activity is safe and won’t be shared with the authorities will appreciate Proton VPN’s Swiss-based location. Businesses that want to check out how Proton VPN is built will like the company’s open-source apps.

Why we picked it
Windscribe is a VPN provider with servers in over 130 cities in 69 countries. It doesn’t specify how many servers it offers. Its standout features include the ability to create custom rules for different Wi-Fi networks, automatically connect or disconnect from a VPN server and connect via a specific protocol. It supports six different VPN protocols.
Windscribe’s features also include:
- Split tunneling
- No-logs policy

- Ad blocker
Windscribe’s free plan includes an unlimited number of device connections, 10GB of data, servers in 10 countries and the same features as in the premium version. Its monthly premium plans cost $9 per month, while annual plans come in at $5.75 per month.

- Auto connect
- No data limits
VPN Unlimited has only one plan, which costs $5 per month when paid yearly ($59.99 for the year). There is no monthly plan, but you can pay for lifetime access for $199.99, which is the most affordable option if you’re planning to use VPN Unlimited for four years or more.
There are no upgrades available, although security features such as a firewall and a personal static IP cost an additional fee. There is a seven-day free trial.

Why we picked it
TunnelBear is a VPN for Android with the might of McAfee behind it (it was acquired by the security company in 2018). You can connect to servers in 47 different countries, which is quite limited compared to other VPN services on this list. It publishes regular, independent security audits.
Its key VPN features include:
- AES 256-bit encryption
- Unlimited secure browsing
- Unlimited devices
- City-level server selection
- Priority customer support
- No-logs policy
- Connect to WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols
TunnelBear provides a free plan for testing and limited usage with 2GB of data. Pricing for premium plans costs $9.99/month if billed monthly with a hefty discount for longer plans. Both one-year and three-year contracts come in at $3.33/month.
TunnelBear also provides an affordable plan for teams, which comes with a seven-day free trial and costs $5.75/month per user when paid annually, although you must have at least two users.
Pros
- Unlimited device connections
- Teams plan option
- Free plan available
Cons
- Only provides servers in 47 countries
- Limited to two VPN protocols
- Many users complained about performance after recent app updates
Who should use it

On CyberGhost’s website
Why we picked it
CyberGhost offers RAM-only VPN servers, which means that no data can be stored on servers on a permanent basis. Each time the server is rebooted, the data is wiped. CyberGhost is headquartered in Romania, which it claims has strong privacy laws and no mandatory data logging. CyberGhost also provides transparency reports every quarter, which detail legal requests the company has received and provide information about its infrastructure.
It has servers in 100 countries, and you can connect to these servers using a choice of three VPN protocols (OpenVPN, IKEv2, WireGuard) or by letting the app automatically choose the best protocol.
Key features include:
- A no-logs policy (independently audited by Deloitte)
- DNS and IP leak protection
- Automatic kill switch
- Unlimited bandwidth
- AES-256 encryption
You can only connect seven devices at the same time. However, CyberGhost is compatible with Android 5 (Lollipop) and higher while most of the other recommended VPNs are only compatible with Android 7 and up.
CyberGhost costs $12.99/month if paid monthly; a six-month plan costs $6.99/month and a two-year plus two-month plan costs $2.19/month. If you want a dedicated IP and security suite, you have to pay an additional monthly fee. If you take out a monthly plan, you only get a 14-day money-back guarantee, but if you take out a six-month contract or longer, you get a 45-day money-back guarantee.
Pros
- Compatible with Android 5 and higher
- No-logs policy is audited by Deloitte
- RAM servers based in 100 countries
Cons
- Can only connect up to seven devices at one time
- Dedicated IP and security suite costs extra
- Monthly plan only offers a 14-day money-back guarantee
Who should use it
If you still have devices that run older operating systems, CyberGhost could work for you, as it’s one of the only options on our list of the best VPNs for Android that is compatible with Android 5.
Mullvad VPN
Best for businesses that require complete anonymity
Free plan

~$5.50 (depending on currency exchange rate)
Google Play Store average rating
3.6
3.7/5
Our rating considers features, value for money, customer support and user reviews. Ratings are assigned exclusively by our editorial team.
Why we picked it
Mullvad promises to “free the internet” with its VPN — and its sign-up process is where it starts. You can use its VPN without providing any personal information, such as email address or password.
Mullvad provides access to about 700 servers in 45-plus countries, which is a low number compared to other VPNs on this list. Its other features include:
- Split tunneling
- An automatic kill switch
- No-logging policy
- DNS leak protection
Some features aren’t available on the Android app compared to the Windows or Mac version. This includes multihop and DAITA support, which is the company’s proprietary tool designed to prevent traffic analysis. It also requires Android 8.0 and above.
Mullvad lets you submit support requests directly in the app or contact the company by email if you need help, but there is no live chat support.
Unlike many of the other VPNs on this list, Mullvad VPN doesn’t apply discounts for longer-term plans or have different pricing tiers for premium options. There is one flat pricing of €5 per month (about $5.50); the pricing in dollars changes according to the exchange rate. The price for Mullvad VPN has not changed since 2009. To add another layer of security, you can also pay in cash.
Pros
- One flat price that you can pay in cash
- Submit support requests in the Android app
- No need to provide personal information to use the VPN
Cons
- Only provides servers in 45-plus countries
- No discounts for longer-term plans
- Requires Android 8.0 and above
Who should use it
Businesses concerned about having to provide personal data during signup will like Mullvad VPN. Companies that want predictable pricing that won’t rise regularly will appreciate Mullvad VPN’s flat pricing model.

What is a VPN for Android?
A VPN for Android is an app installed on your Android device that secures and encrypts your data and internet connection, which makes it difficult for people (that could be hackers or internet service providers) to access and read that data.
By connecting to a server provided by the VPN, you mask your IP address and encrypt your internet activity. A VPN for Android creates a secure tunnel between your phone and the website you’re connecting to. This makes it much harder for someone to access your sensitive information.

What are the benefits of a VPN for Android?
If you’re unsure whether you should implement a VPN for Android, check out the benefits of these services below.
- Maintain anonymity and improve data security. If you work in an industry where security and anonymity are key, a VPN helps by encrypting your data and keeping the information you send and receive anonymous and secure. This also applies if you’re accessing sensitive data at work that you don’t want to fall into the wrong hands.
- Improve browsing experience. VPNs block ads and trackers on your phone, which means you save mobile data that would usually be taken up by this content.
- Safely use secure public Wi-Fi connections. If you’re on the go, you might be tempted to connect to public Wi-Fi, but then there is a risk others could access your data. By using a VPN for Android, you create a secure tunnel that encrypts your data and stops unauthorized access.
- Reduce risk of infection. As VPNs block ads and trackers and normally come with antivirus and security suites, they reduce the risk of your Android device picking up a virus or being exposed to malware.
- Access location-locked content. As VPNs change your IP address to make it look like you’re in a different location, you can access content such as streaming sites and news websites that may otherwise be blocked.
What are the essential features of a VPN for Android?
When selecting the best VPN for Android for your business, there are several key features you should look for.
- Split tunneling. This allows you to choose whether you want to run applications through the VPN or let them connect directly to the internet.
- A kill switch. If your VPN connection drops, then the kill switch automatically stops all internet traffic until the VPN connection is restored.
- DNS leak protection. If your DNS (domain name system) requests are not encrypted, people and companies such as your internet service provider can monitor your activity. DNS leak protection automatically encrypts your DNS requests within the VPN tunnel, meaning they can’t be accessed by third parties.
- A no-logs policy. This is a promise not to store sensitive identifiable user information, including the websites you visit and your IP address.
- Multi-hop routing. This acts like a double VPN so you can send your traffic through more than one server for an extra layer of protection.
How much does a VPN for Android cost?
VPNs normally charge per month, with discounts if you pay annually (or even get a two– or three-year contract). Some VPNs have different tiers, so you can upgrade to access premium features. Pricing for these plans is similar; plans normally cost between $9.99/month and $12.99/month when paid monthly. However, VPN Unlimited and Mullvad VPN both cost around $5/month.
Some VPNs for Android are free or have free plans (such as hide.me, Proton VPN and others), but these often have very limited features. For example, hide.me’s free plan only includes one connection and eight server locations and has restricted speeds.
Methodology: How we chose the best VPN for Android
To help you find the best VPN for Android, we researched top products using a specific set of desired data points. After we collected this data, we narrowed our list to 15 VPNs based on six primary categories encompassing about 45 different metrics. We weighted each metric based on what matters most for users. Using the final score for each provider, we selected the 10 that rose to the top for our guide.
We also assigned each VPN an Editors’ Score encompassing four key areas before converting final scores to a star rating out of five. This score doesn’t affect our selection methodology or assessment of key data points for ultimate list inclusion.
Here’s how our methodology breaks down:
Security (25%)
Security and privacy are the primary reasons businesses invest in a VPN, which is reflected in our weighting for these two categories. To evaluate security, we looked at features such as anonymous browsing, DNS protection, multifactor authentication, a kill switch and split tunneling. We also considered how many simultaneous connections are allowed and whether browser extensions are available.
Privacy (20%)
For this category, we considered if the provider has a no-logs policy and blocks ads and cookies. We also evaluated third-party audits and transparency reports as well as payment anonymity and email protection.
Pricing (15%)
As with any small-business tool, VPN pricing is important. For this category, we looked at monthly and annual pricing, the length of a free trial (if applicable) and connection limits associated with each plan.
Servers (15%)
The number and location of servers play important roles in connection availability and speed. So, we evaluated those two measures for this category, along with the availability of obfuscated, specialized, streaming and gaming servers.
Mobile and app reviews (10%)
For this category, we simply looked at the number of reviews available for each VPN in the Google Play Store as well as the average rating (on a 5-star scale). We used this data to assess user experience and VPN popularity.
Service and support (5%)
Difficult-to-use VPNs get frustrating. We wanted to find out how easy it is to get help if you need it, whatever your preferred support channel (primarily live chat and email/ticketing).
Editors’ Score (10%)
Our Editors’ Score for the best VPN for Android considered four key factors: included features, value for money, popularity and ease of use. After we ranked VPN options using metrics associated with each of the above categories, we evaluated the products at the top of our ranked list and assigned each a grade on a scale from terrible to excellent (each descriptor is associated with a numerical value). The final score (inclusive of our Editors’ Score) was then converted into a star rating (where zero stars is the lowest possible score, and five is the max).
We receive compensation from our partners for Featured Offer placements, which impacts how and where their offer is displayed.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Android supports the PPTP, L2TP and IPsec VPN protocols, which provide some level of anonymity. But, these protocols are not the most up-to-date and don’t have the performance or features of a dedicated VPN, which is why you may want to opt for one of the VPNs on our list.
It’s important to do everything you can to protect your data and stay safe while using the internet, which is why using a VPN on an Android phone is important. Hackers are using smarter ways to try to access your personal information, which makes securing and encrypting that data and your internet activity key.
First download the VPN from the Google Play Store. Then the setup will depend on the provider. Some require you to sign up using your email address, while others let you use their service with complete anonymity. Once you have opened the app, simply connect to a server (or use the auto-connect feature) to start using your VPN for Android.
