Butter on a burger? We’re sold! Traditionally, it’s a Midwestern staple but we ditched the bun and made it irresistibly keto. Crispy edges, juicy bites... just perfect for the grill.

Making low carb simple

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill for 20 minutes on medium heat with the lid down. If you don't have a grill, you can also prepare these delicious burgers on the stovetop. Just fry the burgers in some butter in a frying pan for a few minutes on each side.

  2. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, and pepper.

  3. Finely chop the onion and cut the jalapeño into small pieces. Remove the seeds first if you don’t want it to be too spicy. Add onion and jalapeño to the meat and combine thoroughly with your hands.

  4. Form one hamburger patties per portion. First, shape them into a ball and then slowly press down. If you make them on the grill, leave them a bit thicker because they cook fast.

  5. Grill the patties for 5-7 minutes on each side, depending on how well done you want them. Allow them to rest for 10 minutes before serving so the juices can settle.

  6. While the burgers are on the grill, thinly slice the tomato. Cut the avocado lengthwise, remove the pit and spoon out the flesh.

  7. To assemble, take 3-4 lettuce leaves for each burger. Place burger in the middle, top each with slices of cheese and a slice of butter. Add the tomato and avocado, season with salt and pepper. Try to wrap the burger so you can easily grab it.

Matt and Megha's tips

The onion and the jalapeños are not gonna cook all the way on the grill, they’ll be a bit crunchy. If you want them to be fully-cooked, you can pre-cook them in a skillet before you mix them in the ground meat mixture.

For some extra flavor, add 1/2 tsp garlic powder or some fresh minced garlic in the meat mixture.

Feel free to serve the burgers with homemade ketchup, homemade BBQ sauce or a lovely spicy mayo.

I would like to say that it the safety of the burgers cannot be assumed to be safe if they are not cooked completely.

Too high protein for me. I’ll adjust to 5 to 6 ounces of meat.

One serving calls for half a tomato yet the instructions say place a slice. Which is it? Same for avocado.

Matt and Megha made three servings from the 1lb of ground beef which is 5.3 ounces per burger which also is the average protein for all diet doctor recipes. I think this should be fixed in the recipe someone could go over their protein ratios easily. So which is the correct recipe one or theee burgers from one pound

To much protein 1/2 pond per burger ..how can you properly eat this thing......gross to look at nothing refined in my book. I also agree with the previous comments...dumbing down of the language is indeed a travesty .

May I ask why the ‘butter’ on top of the burger? Do I have to add this?
A large dollop of butter is not palatable to me.

These were great. I made them in an air fryer and added a fried egg on top.

There is plenty of fat already in this burger so you can omit the butter if it doesn't sound appealing.

Yummy, yum yum. Like some others have done, I cooked mine in Air Fryer and added some spicy mayo to the final product. Worked wonderfully and will def make again. Thank you

Firstly, I love the fact that there is a fellow English teacher here. I am an English as a second language teacher, as well as a lover of books that are about a hundred or more years old, and I am saddened by comparing the English of that time to the sometimes very dumbed-down version we use today. However, change is the natural path of any language, so there it is. As for the recipe, I have a rather stupid question. I am blind, and haven't lived on my own for very long, so I'm not sure how to get my butter in slices. Would I freeze it and cut it with a sharp knife? Thanks for any help.

If you are unable to purchase a block of butter, freezing and slicing may work for you!

This was awesome BUT extremely messy if you try to eat it like the picture. So I put everything in a bowl and ate it with a fork and knife. Also, I cooked the burgers in my air fryer. I also cooked a piece of bacon in the air fryer (before the burgers) and had a bacon cheese burger. YUM

Love the bowl idea! And adding bacon is always a win!

I'm making these for the second time, they were honestly so good!. I can get around 5-7 burgers depending on the size and thickness. I've decided to do smaller, thinner ones this time as we don't have butterhead lettuce where I live so the bigger, thicker ones were a little harder to handle. I cut the jalapeno and onion into small pieces and mix them into the meat and make the desired patties, throw some butter in the pan and cook on medium/medium hot till they're cooked, with the thicker, bigger ones I followed the 7 mins each side and they were perfect. Take a piece of lettuce and top it with the burger, a very thin half slice(sliced long ways) of vegan butter, half slice of tomato and a couple pieces of avacado. They turned out SO much better then I was expecting and my boyfriend loves them!
