Meet the Winners of the 7th Annual Focus Features Student Short Film Showcase | Gotham Awards 2025 (2025)

Lights, camera, congratulations! The 7th Annual Focus Features Student Short Film Showcase has unveiled its shining stars, and the film world is buzzing! This year's winners were celebrated at the prestigious Gotham Awards Ceremony in New York City on December 1, 2025. It's an exciting moment for these emerging filmmakers, and we're thrilled to share their stories.

The selection process was no small feat. A panel of esteemed filmmakers and curators handpicked the final five from a pool of 20 talented students representing various US graduate schools. Let's give a round of applause to the brilliant minds behind these captivating short films:

  • Maria Regina Rios Ceja from Loyola Marymount University, hailing from Ciudad Constitución, Mexico, brings us Maybe I’ll Find You in a Robbery (Tal Vez Te Encuentre En Un Asalto). This heartwarming film follows a young girl's unique Christmas plan to reconnect with her incarcerated mother.
  • ishkwaazhe Shane McSauby, a proud member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and a graduate of New York University, presents The Beguiling. This film, which had its international debut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and its U.S. premiere at SXSW, promises a captivating viewing experience.
  • Cameron Clay from Columbia University, a filmmaker and editor from Prince George’s County, Maryland, delves into the intricate relationships between Black men in his film, Jesus is Coming (to take the Church away).
  • Alexander Molochnikov, a Russian filmmaker and theater director based in New York, presents Extremist. This film, which won the Live Action Award and the Special Jury Award at the 2025 BAFTA North America, tells the story of political prisoner Sasha Skochilenko. This film's subject matter is particularly relevant in today's world.
  • Sergio Muñoz Esquer, a Mexican filmmaker from the University of Texas at Austin, brings us Ballad of an Immigrant With Memory. His work, like much of his other work, explores the complexities of human connection, identity, and immigration through a Latinx lens.

Each of these talented filmmakers will receive a $2,000 grant, a significant boost to their burgeoning careers. But that's not all! Their films will also be showcased on Focus Features’ digital streaming platform, giving them a wider audience and a chance to shine.

But here's where it gets interesting... These films tackle diverse themes, from family and faith to identity and political struggle. What do you think about the power of short films to address such complex issues? Do you agree with the jury's selections? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
