Mina the Hollower Delayed: Is This Make-or-Break for Yacht Club Games? (Shovel Knight Devs) (2025)

Yacht Club Games cautions that the upcoming Mina the Hollower is a make-or-break moment for the studio, with its success seen as pivotal to the company’s future. In an interview with Bloomberg, the developers explained that Mina the Hollower, their second IP after the acclaimed Shovel Knight series, was originally slated for an October release but was delayed indefinitely just weeks before launch to maximize its chances of success.

Co-founder and studio head Sean Velasco described the situation as a clear make-or-break scenario: hitting 500,000 sales would be ideal, 200,000 would be very solid, and 100,000 would be concerning. The article notes that if the game underperforms, the team may need to downsize and pursue fresh funding.

Mina the Hollower has been in development for six years. The Kickstarter campaign raised about $1.2 million in 2022, with an initial target launch in December 2023. The game’s scope expanded significantly, and Bloomberg attributes part of the overreach to Alec Faulkner, the first-time project lead who also handled design and the overall direction. Faulkner himself admitted he doesn’t see himself as best suited for that leadership role.

To cut costs, Yacht Club is moving away from a traditional office setup toward a remote-work model, and plans to focus on a single project at a time rather than juggling multiple titles as before. The studio’s broader strategy is to release games more frequently—every couple of years rather than every five or six years—according to cofounder Nick Wozniak. The aim is to avoid long gaps between releases after a period with no new titles.

Founded in 2011, Yacht Club is best known for Shovel Knight, a retro-inspired platformer that debuted in 2014 and spawned several expansions. By 2019, the studio noted it would pivot away from Shovel Knight as it pursued other projects, even as the franchise had surpassed 2.65 million copies sold.

This situation highlights a broader discussion about scope creep, leadership fit in indie projects, and the sustainability of smaller studios in a competitive market. Is delaying a flagship release justified to ensure quality, or does it risk eroding momentum and funding? Share your thoughts on whether the Mina the Hollower delay is a prudent strategic move or a cautionary tale about overextending early on.
